My name is Daniel Nalesnik. When I turned 25 I decided to learn Mandarin Chinese.

After a year of classes, I decided to quit my job, sell all of my possessions, and move to China for a full year of intensive Mandarin training.

I finished the fall semester in 2009 at Peking University in Beijing, and am now enrolled in semester #2 at Fudan University in Shanghai.

Xidi Village

Our tickets out of Hefei were mistakenly purchased for the wrong day. We eventually found tickets but we would leave three days later than planned. In the interim, we decided to climb a local mountain (next post) and see the village where, 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' was filmed.

On the first day we went to Xidi village. Xidi is old and the families living there have been there since the village was created during the Ming Dynasty. They make souvenirs from scratch, and occasionally people will visit their village and buy them. There are a few signs in the nearby areas letting visitors know that the village is now famous for the movie having been made there.

We stopped at a local "bar" and tried some wine. It was like drinking brandy. The villager there asked us if we watched Nascar. He loves Nascar. We told him no, we do not watch Nascar.

See my photos from Xidi Village.
